Tripura Border Incident:
A 25-year-old man identified as Akash Das was injured after being shot by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in North Tripura district on Monday while he was allegedly attempting to climb the international border fence to cross into Bangladesh, officials said.

According to BSF sources, the incident took place near Panisagar in North Tripura, where Das—believed to be a Bangladeshi national—was reportedly intercepted by security forces while trying to scale the fence. Despite warnings, he allegedly refused to stop, prompting BSF jawans to fire using non-lethal pump-action guns.

BSF: Man Tried to Cross Border Despite Warnings
A BSF source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Sky Link Times:
“This person is a Bangladeshi national. As per our records, he crossed the border and entered India five years ago. He has relatives on the Indian side. His father died after they entered India, and we have no information on his mother’s whereabouts. He was attempting to cross the border back into Bangladesh when our personnel stopped him.”
The official added that Das suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was immediately taken to a local hospital by BSF personnel.
Shifted to GBP Hospital; Police Await Confirmation of Identity
Medical officers confirmed that Das received preliminary emergency treatment and was later transferred to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala for advanced care.
Avinash Rai, Superintendent of Police, North Tripura, confirmed the incident and told Sky Link Times:
“He was trying to cross the boundary wire. We are still verifying documents to confirm his nationality. A case will be registered after we receive a complaint from the BSF, which will be filed soon.”

Tripura’s Vulnerable Border Zones
Tripura shares an 856-km long border with Bangladesh, including land and riverine stretches. While most sections are secured with barbed-wire fencing, officials note that some patches remain unfenced due to terrain and local disputes, making them prone to illegal crossings, smuggling activity, and migration-related incidents.
Border authorities have increased surveillance following several recent attempts involving illegal entry and exit across the Tripura-Bangladesh boundary.
Investigation Underway
Officials said details regarding the man’s legal status and purpose of crossing are still being examined. Police are awaiting BSF’s formal complaint before beginning legal proceedings.
Further updates are expected once medical and identity verification reports are submitted.
