Responding to a post by the President on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the initiative reflects India’s deep respect for Santhali culture and acknowledges the community’s contribution to national development.

“A commendable effort! The Constitution in Santhali language will help deepen constitutional awareness and democratic participation. India is very proud of the Santhali culture and the contribution of Santhali people to national progress,” PM Modi wrote.

President Murmu Calls It a Moment of Pride

Addressing the gathering on Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu described the release as a moment of pride and joy for the entire Santhali community. She expressed confidence that the initiative would enable Santhali-speaking citizens to read, understand and engage with the Constitution in their own mother tongue.

The Constitution has been published in Santhali using the Ol Chiki script, marking a significant milestone as 2025 commemorates the centenary year of the Ol Chiki script. The President appreciated the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for ensuring the publication coincides with this historic occasion.

Empowering Tribal Communities Through Language

President Murmu emphasised that access to the Constitution in indigenous languages empowers citizens by making fundamental rights, duties and constitutional values more accessible. She noted that linguistic inclusion strengthens democratic participation and bridges the gap between the people and India’s constitutional framework.
Speaking partly in Santhali, the President said the publication would serve as a powerful tool for awareness and empowerment across tribal regions.

Santhali Language and Constitutional Recognition

The Santhali language was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution through the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003. It is one of India’s oldest living languages and is spoken by a large tribal population across Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar.
The event was attended by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, senior officials, scholars and members of the Santhali community.

A Step Towards Inclusive Democracy

The release of the Constitution in Santhali is being seen as a major step towards inclusive governance, reinforcing India’s commitment to linguistic diversity and social justice. By making the nation’s supreme legal document accessible in regional and indigenous languages, the initiative strengthens the foundation of participatory democracy.
