Agartala: Potatoes are an essential part of the daily diet, finding a place in almost every household — from vegetarian dishes to meat curries. To boost the state’s self-reliance in potato production, the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department of Tripura is strengthening efforts to expand scientific potato cultivation across districts.

As part of this initiative, a one-day workshop and training programme on potato cultivation for Unkoti district was held on Tuesday at Manasi Hall, Kumarghat. The event witnessed participation from several dignitaries, including Kumarghat Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Sumati Das, Unkoti Zilla Parishad President Amalendu Das, Vice President Santosh Dhar, and BSC Chairman Tapan Joy Reang.
Experts such as Dr. Rajiv Ghosh, Head of the State Horticulture and Horticultural Crops Research Center, Deputy Director and ARC Nodal Officer Orin Majumdar, Deputy Director Avinash Das, and Unkoti District Agriculture Director Ramendra Reang attended the training and guided farmers.
“Potato Is Our Passion” — Sumati Das
Addressing the workshop, Chairperson Sumati Das said,
“Potato is not just a vegetable, potato is our passion.”
She added that although people might manage a day without fish or meat, they can hardly imagine a meal without potatoes.
She urged farmers to take up potato cultivation on a larger scale, using ARC (Apical Rooted Cutting) technology to boost productivity and make Tripura self-sufficient in potato production.
She also highlighted the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state government in improving farmers’ income and promoting modern agricultural techniques.

ARC: Tripura’s Modern Potato Revolution
Unkoti Zilla Parishad President Amalendu Das also stressed the importance of adopting new technologies in agriculture.
“Potato is our daily need. If we do not use new technologies, we will lag behind,” he said.

He explained that although seed production in traditional method is costly, ARC technology allows farmers to produce potato seedlings easily, with yields nearly three times higher than traditional methods.
This ensures higher income and better productivity for farmers.
He encouraged farmers across the district to widely adopt the ARC system, considering the significant benefits it offers.
Farmers Participate in Large Numbers
The workshop was organised by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Unkoti District, and saw participation from farmers across Kumarghat, Kailashahar, Pencharthal, Machmara, and nearby regions.
Officials and experts demonstrated various aspects of potato cultivation — including seedling production, field preparation, irrigation methods, and best practices for pest and disease management.
The event strengthened the state’s mission to increase potato output and promote modern agriculture technology among rural farmers.
