Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin today. The meeting marked a continuation of high-level engagement between the two Asian giants following their last interaction in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.

Both leaders welcomed the positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations over the past year. They reaffirmed their shared vision that India and China are development partners, not rivals, and emphasized that differences between the two countries should not be allowed to escalate into disputes.
Prime Minister Modi and President Xi highlighted that a stable, cooperative relationship between India and China—home to 2.8 billion people—is essential not only for the growth and prosperity of both nations but also for advancing the broader goals of a multipolar Asia and a multipolar world, in keeping with the trends of the 21st century.
Border Peace and Stability
Prime Minister underscored the importance of peace and tranquility in the border areas as the foundation for continued progress in bilateral relations. Both leaders took note with satisfaction of the successful disengagement that took place last year and the maintenance of stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since then.
They expressed their commitment to pursuing a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue, guided by the political perspective of their overall relations and the long-term interests of their peoples. The leaders recognized the important understandings reached by the two Special Representatives in their most recent talks earlier this month and pledged to continue supporting their efforts.
Strengthening People-to-People Ties
The two leaders placed strong emphasis on enhancing people-to-people exchanges. They agreed to strengthen connectivity by resuming and expanding direct flights between the two countries and by facilitating visas for students, professionals, and tourists.
Building on the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and tourist visas, both sides committed to broadening cultural and educational exchanges as a means to foster greater trust and goodwill among their populations.
Economic and Trade Relations
On trade and economic cooperation, Prime Minister Modi and President Xi acknowledged the critical role of India and China in stabilizing global trade and supply chains during uncertain times.

Shared Global Responsibilities
Prime Minister Modi reiterated that both India and China pursue strategic autonomy in foreign policy and stressed that bilateral relations should not be viewed through the lens of any third country.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of expanding common ground on a range of bilateral, regional, and global challenges—including counter-terrorism, climate change, and ensuring fair trade practices in multilateral institutions. They underlined the importance of India-China cooperation in strengthening the voice of the Global South in international forums.
SCO, BRICS, and Multilateral Engagement
Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation for China’s role as host of the SCO Summit in Tianjin and reaffirmed India’s commitment to playing a constructive role in the organization.
He extended an invitation to President Xi Jinping to attend the BRICS Summit, which India will host in 2026. President Xi welcomed the invitation and assured China’s support for India’s BRICS Presidency, underscoring the importance of BRICS as a platform for advancing the interests of emerging economies.
Meeting with Mr. Cai Qi
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also held a meeting with Mr. Cai Qi, Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China.
