Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and launched multiple development projects worth over ₹1,200 crore in Imphal, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the growth and prosperity of the North East.
Addressing a massive gathering, the Prime Minister said these projects would strengthen infrastructure, create jobs for youth, boost tourism, and empower women, bringing long-term benefits for Manipur’s people.

Major Projects Launched
Among the key projects launched were:
- Manipur Urban Roads Project with an investment of over ₹3,600 crore.
- Manipur Infotech Development Project worth more than ₹500 crore, including an IT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to promote startups and technology-based industries.
- New Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, addressing a long-pending demand for better governance infrastructure.
- New Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri.
- Manipur Bhavans in Delhi and Kolkata to provide affordable accommodation for students and professionals.
- Four new Ima Markets, reinforcing Manipur’s unique tradition of women-led marketplaces.

Focus on Infrastructure and Jobs in Manipur
PM Modi highlighted that Manipur’s growth rate was less than 1% before 2014, but today it is progressing much faster. With accelerated road and highway construction, the state is seeing a new phase of development.
“Imphal is a city of possibilities,” the PM said, adding that the new projects will generate fresh employment opportunities and infuse new energy into the youth of the state.
Relief and Empowerment Initiatives
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s efforts to reduce hardships in Manipur:
- 7,000 new houses approved for displaced families.
- ₹3,000 crore special package, including ₹500 crore support for violence-affected citizens.
- GST reductions on daily essentials, cement, hotels, and food services, lowering costs for families and boosting local businesses.
- Flood-mitigation projects to tackle recurring challenges.
Women Empowerment: Ima Markets
Calling women empowerment a central pillar of development, PM Modi hailed Manipur’s famed Ima Keithel (Mother’s Market), where women lead the economy. The inauguration of four new Ima Markets is expected to strengthen this tradition and empower thousands of women entrepreneurs.
Sports and Culture
The Prime Minister underlined Manipur’s role in Indian sports and culture, recalling its contribution to the freedom struggle and national defence. He said the National Sports University, Marjing Polo Complex, and Olympian Park are part of the vision to make Manipur a hub for sports excellence.
“Without Manipuri athletes, Indian sports remain incomplete,” he remarked.
Message of Peace and Progress
PM Modi stressed that violence is a grave injustice to Manipur’s ancestors and future generations. He urged all communities to move forward on the path of peace, dialogue, and harmony.
“Manipur is the crown jewel adorning Mother India. Together, we must make it a powerful centre of India’s growth,” he said, extending his congratulations to the people for the newly launched projects.
