The evaluation took place during the 109th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG), held at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. According to an official statement, the meeting focused on ensuring alignment with PM GatiShakti principles, including integrated planning, last-mile connectivity, and a “Whole of Government” approach.

Rail Projects to Strengthen Strategic Corridors

The Ministry of Railways proposed two major third-line railway projects.

Jalandhar Cantt–Jammu Tawi Third Line

The first project involves constructing a third railway line between Jalandhar Cantt and Jammu Tawi, spanning 210.750 km across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. The alignment will cover 27 stations and pass through key districts such as Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kangra, Pathankot, Kathua, and Samba.
Officials said the project holds strategic importance for national security by enabling faster movement of defence personnel and supplies to border areas. Economically, it is expected to enhance trade by facilitating the transportation of agricultural produce, construction materials, and essential goods.

Manikpur–Itarsi Third Line

The second railway proposal includes a 518.532-km third line between Manikpur and Itarsi, covering districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh such as Chitrakoot, Satna, Katni, Jabalpur, and Narmadapuram.
The corridor is considered vital for strengthening connectivity between northern and central India. It is expected to increase operational capacity, reduce congestion, improve network resilience, and allow additional train services to meet rising demand.

Greenfield Airport in Assam

The Ministry of Civil Aviation proposed the development of a Greenfield Airport at Doloo in Silchar, Assam, strategically located near National Highway NH-27.
Once operational, the airport is expected to act as a catalyst for socio-economic development in the Cachar district and surrounding regions by improving regional air connectivity and supporting trade, tourism, and employment generation.

Surat Metro Extension to Boost Urban Mobility

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs proposed a 4.4-km elevated extension of Surat Metro Corridor II (Phase I) in Gujarat. The extension will connect Saroli to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor.
The project includes three stations, with provisions for two future stations, and aims to enhance urban mobility while integrating Surat more effectively with regional and national transport networks.

Focus on Multimodal Integration

The NPG evaluated the projects for compliance with PM GatiShakti principles, particularly integrated multimodal infrastructure and seamless connectivity between economic and social hubs.
According to the Commerce Ministry, these initiatives are expected to significantly improve logistics efficiency, reduce travel time, strengthen national security, and accelerate regional development.
As India continues its infrastructure push, PM GatiShakti remains central to coordinated planning and faster execution of critical projects across the country.
