According to officials, the message was sent to the official WhatsApp number of the Mumbai Traffic Police late Thursday. The sender, identifying themselves as a member of “Lashkar-e-Jihadi,” claimed that 14 Pakistani terrorists had entered India and were preparing to trigger blasts using 400 kg of RDX.

The threatening note further alleged that the attacks could kill over 1 crore people, leaving Mumbai “shaken” on the festival day.

Police Suspect Hoax But Don’t Want to Take Chances

A senior Mumbai Police officer said that initial investigation suggests the message might be a hoax. However, the matter is being taken with utmost seriousness given the scale of the claims and the sensitivity of the festive season.

Even if it appears fake, we cannot afford to ignore such threats,” the officer said. “Security has been intensified at all major spots, especially immersion points and crowded areas.”

Security Tightened Across the City

Checkpoints have been set up at several entry and exit points of Mumbai.

Vehicle inspections are being carried out across key routes.

Security has been ramped up at railway stations, markets, and religious places, including Ganesh immersion sites.

Past Incidents Prompt Caution

Mumbai has been a target of terror attacks in the past, most notably the 26/11 attacks in 2008 and multiple bomb blasts earlier. Authorities do not want to risk dismissing any suspicious communication, especially when it mentions explosives and possible human bombs.

Anant Chaturdashi: A High-Security Occasion

Anant Chaturdashi, the final day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, witnesses massive crowds as devotees gather to immerse Ganesh idols in the sea and other water bodies. With lakhs of people expected to participate in processions, police presence is always heightened during this time.

This year, the added terror threat has pushed security agencies to remain on their toes.

Probe Underway

Officials confirmed that multiple teams are working to identify the source of the message. Whether the sender is linked to terror groups or it is simply a mischief-maker is still under investigation.

We are pursuing all leads,” an officer said. “The public is requested to stay calm and cooperate with police checks.”

Citizens Urged to Remain Alert

Mumbai Police have urged citizens not to panic but to stay vigilant and report any unattended vehicles, bags, or suspicious activity immediately via the 100 helpline or to the nearest police station.

As of now, no evidence of explosives or terrorist activity has been found. The threat is being investigated from all angles.
