In a major boost to India’s security framework, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a significant expansion of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The total sanctioned strength of the force will now increase from approximately 1.5 lakh to 2.2 lakh personnel, with 70,000 new recruits expected to be inducted by the year 2029.
This move is aimed at strengthening the security of vital installations, airports, metro networks, and critical industrial infrastructure across India.
Why the Expansion?
Officials from the Home Ministry stated that the CISF has been facing increased deployment demands due to:
-Rapid growth in India’s infrastructure and industrial sectors
-Expansion of urban transit systems like metro rail
-Rising threat perceptions around public and private critical infrastructure
The additional manpower will be crucial to manage emerging security challenges in both the public and private sectors.

Recruitment Roadmap
The recruitment process will be phased over the next four years, with thousands of new positions to be opened annually. The CISF will also:
-Upgrade training facilities
-Improve deployment logistics
-Introduce new technology-based training and surveillance systems
This decision is seen as a strategic step to modernize and scale up India’s internal security capabilities.
CISF: A Backbone of India’s Infrastructure Security
Established in 1969, the CISF is responsible for guarding nuclear installations, space establishments, airports, metro systems, oil fields, and power plants. The force also provides security to VIPs and protects critical private sector units upon request.
