West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lashed out at the Delhi Police for allegedly referring to Bengali (Bangla) as a “Bangladeshi language” in an official communication dated August 3. Calling it “scandalous, insulting, anti-national, and unconstitutional,” Banerjee expressed her outrage on social media, asserting that the Bengali language is deeply rooted in India’s history and culture.

The letter in question has sparked widespread criticism from Bengali artists, intellectuals, and political parties across the spectrum — including the CPI(M), Banerjee’s primary political rival in the state.

“This is a direct insult to our mother tongue, our identity, and our heritage. Bengali is one of the richest and most ancient languages of India, spoken by millions across the world.”

Reacting to her remarks, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya accused Banerjee of deliberately misrepresenting facts for political gain.
“Mamata Banerjee is using a non-issue to stoke Bengali sentiment for vote-bank politics. Her outrage is a badly scripted political stunt,” Malviya posted on X.
The Delhi Police has yet to officially clarify or retract the language used in the letter, which has now become a flashpoint in an already tense political atmosphere ahead of upcoming state by-elections.
