Kiren Rijiju Rebukes TMC MP Over Tagore Tribute:
A political controversy erupted on the occasion of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary after Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly responded to allegations made by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghosh regarding the absence of BJP lawmakers during a floral tribute ceremony in Parliament.

The exchange unfolded on social media platform X, where Ghosh criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that no sitting BJP MP or Lok Sabha Speaker attended the floral tribute ceremony held at Samvidhan Sadan to honour Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary.

Sagarika Ghosh Questions BJP’s Presence
In her social media post, Sagarika Ghosh alleged that the BJP prioritised political interests in West Bengal over respect for Bengal’s cultural icon. Sharing a photograph of herself paying tribute before Tagore’s portrait decorated with flowers, she remarked that Tagore had become merely an “election weapon” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Her post quickly gained attention online and intensified the political discourse surrounding the celebrations of Tagore Jayanti.
Rijiju Explains Parliamentary Practices
Responding sharply, Kiren Rijiju dismissed the accusations and explained established parliamentary practices related to tribute ceremonies when Parliament is not in session.
According to Rijiju, MPs who are present in Delhi may voluntarily visit Samvidhan Sadan to offer floral tributes, while others can pay respects at any convenient location. He also stated that Parliament officials and some BJP former MPs were present during the ceremony.
Rijiju accused the opposition of unnecessarily politicising the issue and remarked that the BJP had not questioned the absence of Congress or Trinamool Congress MPs at the event.

Tagore Jayanti Becomes Political Battleground
The controversy coincided with a major political event in West Bengal, where BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and several cabinet colleagues reportedly took oath on the same day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states attended a large-scale celebration organised at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. The event marked the first time a Prime Minister attended such a grand Rabindranath Tagore birth anniversary programme at the venue.
Tagore’s birth anniversary was observed on the 25th day of Boisakh according to the Bengali calendar.
TMC Alleges Obstruction of Celebrations
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress social media handles alleged that permissions for Rabindra Jayanti celebrations at multiple locations in Bengal had been denied by authorities. The party accused the BJP of attempting to overshadow Bengal’s cultural identity and vowed to continue honouring Tagore across the state.
Despite the allegations, celebrations took place not only near West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence but also in several parts of Kolkata.
The political sparring once again highlighted the deepening rivalry between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress ahead of future political battles in West Bengal.
