New Delhi | July 22, 2025 – In a significant and unexpected development, Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from the second-highest constitutional office with immediate effect, citing medical reasons and the need to prioritize his health.

The announcement came via an official letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, in which Jagdeep Dhankhar invoked Article 67(a) of the Constitution of India, which allows the Vice President to resign by submitting a written notice to the President.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” the letter stated.
🇮🇳 A Graceful Exit with Gratitude
Jagdeep Dhankhar, who also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Members of Parliament.
“I express my deep gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable,” he wrote.
Jagdeep Dhankhar said he will always cherish the trust and affection shown by parliamentarians and reflected on the invaluable insights gained during his tenure in India’s democratic framework.
🏛️ Monsoon Session Address & Departure
Interestingly, Jagdeep Dhankhar presided over the Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Monsoon Session, where he addressed issues including the impeachment of High Court judge Yashwant Sinha.
His sudden resignation on the same day has surprised many in the political fraternity.
📜 Constitutional Provision
- Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution allows the Vice President to resign by submitting a written letter to the President of India.
- His resignation triggers the process for the election of a new Vice President, which must be held within 6 months.
