The move marks a major step in preventive healthcare, with the state government allocating ₹38 crore for the ambitious initiative aimed at protecting young girls from certain types of cancer, notably those linked to the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

A Landmark in Preventive Public Health

Speaking at the 16th annual breast cancer awareness walkathon — ‘Oru Nadai Oru Nambikkai’ (One Step, One Hope) — held at Island Grounds, Chennai, Subramanian said the tender process for vaccine procurement has been completed.

> “Once launched, Tamil Nadu will be the first state in the country to provide the cancer-preventive vaccine entirely free of cost to girls aged one to fourteen,” he said.

The initiative, according to Subramanian, will serve as a model for other Indian states, underscoring Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s commitment to prioritising health, prevention, and early awareness in public policy.

Fitness, Awareness, and Lifestyle Matter

During the event, Minister Subramanian highlighted the crucial link between physical fitness and cancer prevention.

> “Scientific studies have proven that those who walk or run daily face a significantly lower risk of developing cancer. Regular exercise remains one of the most effective preventive measures,” he explained.

He shared that he personally walked 13 kilometres on Sunday morning, reinforcing the event’s message of health and hope.

Actress Sanchita Shetty, cancer survivors, and students were among over 500 participants who joined the walkathon, holding placards promoting early screening, exercise, and healthy living.

Health Alert: Polio Precautionary Measures

The Minister also revealed that six districts in Tamil Nadu have been placed on alert following reports of a potential global resurgence of polio after two decades.
Precautionary vaccination drives are already underway to ensure continued public immunity and safety across vulnerable areas.

> “With such sustained health initiatives, Tamil Nadu continues to lead India in ensuring every citizen’s right to a healthy life,” Subramanian added.

A Model for Other States

Tamil Nadu’s new initiative adds to its reputation as a pioneer in public health, following successful programmes in maternal care, dengue prevention, and mental health awareness.

Experts say this free vaccination drive could significantly reduce future cancer cases and set a new benchmark for preventive medicine in India.
