Numbers Favoured NDA
Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu and currently the Governor of Maharashtra, secured 452 votes, clinching a comfortable victory over Reddy. By comparison, Jagdeep Dhankhar had won in 2022 with 528 votes, while M. Venkaiah Naidu received 516 votes in 2017.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college of 788 MPs (781 eligible this year), comprising 233 elected and 12 nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha. With NDA commanding the support of nearly 439 MPs and additional backing from the YSR Congress Party, Radhakrishnan’s victory was almost assured.
Meanwhile, Reddy secured votes from the INDIA bloc and other allies, including the AAP, which had recently distanced itself from the Opposition alliance.
Polling & Results
The election was held in Parliament House between 10 am and 5 pm under a secret ballot system. The counting of votes began at 6 pm, supervised by the Returning Officer appointed on a rotational basis.
The election was necessitated by the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in July 2025, citing health concerns.
Role of the Vice President
As the second-highest constitutional authority in India, the Vice President presides over the Rajya Sabha as its Chairman, ensuring the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings. The Vice President also assumes the role of Acting President whenever the President’s post is vacant or the incumbent is unable to discharge duties.
The process of electing India’s Vice President is governed by Articles 64 and 68 of the Constitution, and is conducted by the Election Commission of India under the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952.
What Lies Ahead
With his victory, CP Radhakrishnan will step into one of the nation’s most critical constitutional roles, responsible not just for presiding over debates but also for ensuring that the spirit of parliamentary democracy is upheld.
The win further consolidates the NDA’s hold over key constitutional positions and marks another political setback for the INDIA bloc, which has struggled to convert its numbers into electoral gains at the national level.
