A Joint Effort for Global Sustainability
The Ideathon was officially announced in New Delhi with participation from senior Indian and EU officials. According to Dr. Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary at the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (OPSA), the challenge represents a shared vision between India and the EU to create globally impactful yet locally relevant solutions to plastic pollution.
“This Ideathon is an excellent example of India-EU cooperation for tackling a pressing global challenge. By leveraging research and innovation, we aim to support both Indian and European contexts in curbing plastic waste,” Dr. Maini said.
Why the Initiative Matters
Marine plastic litter is one of the fastest-growing environmental threats, harming marine life, impacting coastal economies, and posing risks to human health. India has already taken significant steps to address the issue, including the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar campaign and a nationwide ban on single-use plastics.
From the EU’s perspective, this Ideathon builds on its strong commitment to sustainability. Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, emphasized:
“This initiative brings us together to fight marine plastic pollution, which endangers not just ecosystems but also livelihoods across our regions.”
Research, Innovation and Collaboration
During the launch, experts presented detailed insights into the landscape of marine plastic litter. Professor Hoysala N. Chanakya from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, outlined India’s challenges and ongoing efforts, while John Hanus from the European Commission highlighted parallel EU initiatives.
Both experts underscored the need for coordinated and sustained international cooperation. The Ideathon framework, including process, structure, guidelines, and timelines, was also shared with participants.
