Heavy Rainfall in Mumbai on Saturday !
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning on Sunday (September 28). The alert will remain in effect until Monday morning, raising concerns over possible flooding and travel disruptions in Maharashtra’s coastal belt.
On Saturday, parts of Mumbai woke up to moderate to heavy showers under a ‘yellow’ alert. According to IMD data, Colaba recorded 54 mm rainfall while the Santacruz observatory received 12 mm in the past 24 hours.

Notably, Mumbai has already received 445 mm of rainfall this September, surpassing its typical monthly average of 380 mm. This indicates that the city has experienced above-normal rainfall for the month, intensifying worries about waterlogging and urban flooding.
Red Alert Explained: What It Means
A red alert is the highest weather warning issued by the IMD, signaling a high probability of extremely heavy rain (above 204 mm in 24 hours) in certain regions. Such conditions often lead to waterlogging, traffic jams, train delays, and power outages in Mumbai and adjoining districts.
Alongside Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts have also been placed under red alert, making the entire western coastal belt of Maharashtra vulnerable to flooding. For Saturday, the IMD has kept an ‘orange’ alert in place, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas.

Government Advisory: Safety First
The Maharashtra government has issued a public advisory, urging residents to:
🔸Avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone zones.
🔸Refrain from taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
🔸Do not cross waterlogged roads or bridges, as strong currents can be life-threatening.
🔸Follow official updates and avoid spreading unverified information.
The advisory also highlighted the importance of taking flood safety precautions, including keeping emergency supplies ready, charging mobile phones, and securing valuables.
Past Incidents Raise Concerns
Mumbai’s infrastructure has often struggled to cope with sudden cloudbursts and extreme rainfall. Instances of severe waterlogging in Sion, Dadar, Kurla, and Andheri during past monsoons have caused major disruptions. With Ganesh Visarjan ceremonies still ongoing in some areas, authorities are on high alert to prevent accidents due to waterlogging.
What Lies Ahead?
Meteorologists suggest that the ongoing rainfall activity is linked to strong monsoon systems over the Arabian Sea and a low-pressure area over central India, both fueling moisture over the Konkan belt.
Authorities are expected to keep pumping stations, disaster response teams, and hospitals on standby. Citizens are advised to remain cautious and plan travel only if absolutely necessary.
