Hamas has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire proposal with Israel that includes the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, an Egyptian official source confirmed on Monday.

Senior Hamas official Basem Naim announced the group’s approval on Facebook, while noting that other Palestinian factions have also informed mediators of their consent. Egypt and Qatar, with U.S. support, have been brokering talks in an effort to halt the fighting.

While Hamas has formally accepted, Israel has not yet issued an official response. An Israeli official confirmed only that the proposal was received.

Escalation on the Ground

As negotiations continue, Israeli forces advanced into the Sabra suburb of Gaza City on Monday, with witnesses reporting at least nine tanks and bulldozers moving in.

The advance comes amid heavy bombardment across Gaza City, forcing thousands of Palestinians to flee west and south in fear of an imminent ground assault.

Israel’s Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Eyal Zamir, described the conflict as being at “a turning point,” with the military intensifying strikes against Hamas in central Gaza.

Domestic Pressure in Israel

Inside Israel, public pressure for a deal is mounting. On Sunday, tens of thousands of Israelis staged some of the largest protests since the war began, urging the government to reach an agreement that would free the estimated 50 remaining hostages from the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. Israeli officials believe only 20 of them are still alive.

The ceasefire proposal, if accepted by both sides, could mark the most significant pause in fighting since the conflict reignited.
