Washington, D.C. – July 26, 2025: Former U.S. Congressman George Santos has officially begun serving a seven-year prison sentence following his conviction on multiple fraud and money laundering charges earlier this year. The controversial Republican figure was taken into custody at a federal facility after being found guilty of misusing campaign funds, wire fraud, and making false statements to federal authorities.
Santos, who once represented New York’s 3rd Congressional District, faced a series of legal battles after numerous inconsistencies were uncovered in his personal, professional, and campaign finance records. His sentencing marks a dramatic fall from grace for a politician who had gained national attention for fabricating key parts of his resume and biography.
In a post on X before he reported to prison, Santos said his “rhinestones are packed”.
“I may be leaving the stage (for now), but trust me legends never truly exit,” he wrote.
Federal prosecutors described Santos’ actions as a “deliberate scheme to defraud donors and enrich himself.” Despite his defense team arguing for a lighter sentence, the court maintained the severity of the crimes warranted the full term.
He was also ordered to pay at least $374,000 in restitution.
The controversy began when the New York Times published a story that year revealing Santos – who had no background in politics – had lied about his CV, including having a university degree and working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
It was not long before a series of new lies came to light, including that he falsely claimed his mother survived the 11 September terrorist attacks. Shortly after, local and federal officials launched investigations into the congressman.
This case has intensified calls for stricter candidate vetting and campaign finance reform across the U.S. political system.
