Bangladesh’s much-anticipated general elections are set to be held in the first half of February next year, the country’s Election Commission (EC) chief announced on Monday.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal confirmed the timeline, stating that the electoral process is on track and preparations are being made to ensure a fair and transparent vote.

We are working to hold the next parliamentary General Election in the first half of February 2026. All necessary steps, including the finalization of voter lists and logistical arrangements, will be completed on time,” Awal told reporters in Dhaka.

The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions, with opposition parties calling for electoral reforms and international observers urging Bangladesh to guarantee a level playing field for all candidates.

Preparations Underway

According to the EC, updated voter rolls will be published later this year, and General Election materials will be distributed to districts well in advance. Training sessions for polling officials are also expected to begin by December.

Awal emphasised that the commission will remain neutral and work within constitutional provisions to ensure credibility.

“Our priority is to uphold the democratic rights of the people. The election will be conducted in a free, fair, and inclusive manner,” he said.

Political Reactions

The ruling Awami League has welcomed the announcement, saying it reflects the government’s commitment to democratic processes. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), however, reiterated its demand for a neutral caretaker government to oversee the elections—something the Awami League strongly opposes.

Political analysts believe the early confirmation of the poll schedule could help reduce uncertainty and encourage dialogue between parties, though deep political divisions remain a challenge.

International Interest

Bangladesh’s elections are closely watched by the international community due to the country’s growing economic importance in South Asia and its role in regional stability. Several foreign missions have expressed interest in sending observers once the official election date is announced.
