On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, new data has exposed a distressing surge in crimes against women in Bangladesh. According to figures released by the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS), 663 rape cases were recorded in the first nine months of 2025, raising serious concerns about public safety, accountability and the treatment of women under the current interim government.
The report coincides with global observances aimed at combating gender-based violence, making the findings even more grim.

A Crisis Hidden Beneath the Surface
Human rights activist Sultana Kamal, speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, warned that the documented figures represent only a fraction of the real situation.
> “We learn about rape and torture when they reach the media, usually after a murder or a particularly brutal incident. There are countless forms of violence that never come to light,” she said.
She added that the growing trend reflects a severe failure of the state, society and families to ensure women’s dignity and safety.
Impunity and Inaction Fueling Violence
Activists have repeatedly pointed to the culture of impunity as a root cause behind the rise in such crimes. According to Sultana:
> “There used to be a belief among criminals that committing these crimes would lead to punishment. That belief has disappeared.”
The lack of timely investigations and weak enforcement mechanisms have reportedly emboldened perpetrators, contributing to a breakdown in law and order under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.
Girls Increasingly Targeted
Fawzia Moslem, President of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, expressed concern over the increasing attacks on minor girls.
> “In many months, more girls are tortured than adult women. This reflects how cruel the situation has become.”
She criticised the government for failing to curb extremist and anti-women elements, saying this inaction has encouraged “terrorists and anti-women forces” to operate more boldly.

Worsening Law and Order Situation
Reports indicate a sharp rise in incidents ranging from street harassment and assaults on women leaders to violence targeting ordinary female commuters. Analysts say this spike is indicative of a rapidly declining law and order environment, further aggravated by political instability and a lack of governmental oversight.
Women’s rights organisations argue that unless strong legal enforcement, societal reforms and education initiatives are implemented, violence against women will continue to escalate.
Call for Immediate Government Action
As Bangladesh grapples with the alarming statistics, activists are urging the interim administration to strengthen policing, implement gender-sensitive policies, and fulfil its obligations under international conventions such as the Beijing Declaration.
The day meant to highlight the fight against gender-based violence instead paints a somber picture—one of a nation struggling to protect its women and girls.
