Bangladesh is experiencing unprecedented political turmoil as widespread protests erupt across the capital, Dhaka, in response to a controversial new law introduced by the interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. The law, which grants the government sweeping powers to dismiss public servants without due process, has sparked outrage among civil servants, teachers, and activists, leading to sustained demonstrations that have disrupted daily life in the capital.

Employees of various government ministries and departments have announced that they will continue their protest program on Tuesday after holding day-long protests at various places including the Secretariat on Monday demanding the withdrawal of the interim government’s ‘Government Jobs (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’.
In response to the escalating unrest, authorities have deployed special forces and paramilitary units throughout Dhaka to maintain order. Despite these measures, protests have continued unabated, highlighting the deep-seated discontent with the government’s recent actions.
The protests are further fueled by political tensions surrounding the timing of the upcoming national elections. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has warned that cooperation with the interim government will be “difficult” unless elections are held by December 2025, while Yunus has proposed a broader timeframe extending into June 2026. The delay in setting a definitive election date has intensified divisions among political parties and raised concerns about the future of democracy in Bangladesh.
Adding to the volatility, the suspension of the Awami League’s registration by the Election Commission has effectively barred the party from contesting future elections, further polarizing the political landscape. Yunus’ spokesperson has warned of potential destabilisation, while Hasina’s son has accused Yunus of political vendetta, exacerbating national tensions.
