A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Bangladesh on Friday morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 200 across multiple districts, according to local media and official reports. The moderate yet powerful tremor triggered widespread panic, structural damage and chaotic scenes in factories, universities and residential areas.

Fatalities Reported in Dhaka, Narsingdi and Narayanganj

According to The Dhaka Tribune, four deaths were recorded in Dhaka, five in Narsingdi and one in Narayanganj.
In the capital’s Armanitola area, a rooftop railing collapse killed three people and injured several others as the tremor shook ageing structures.

In Narsingdi district, the quake caused intense shaking, leading to five fatalities and dozens of injuries. One person from Narayanganj also died due to the impact of falling debris.

Epicentre in Madhabdi; Tremor Felt Across Several Cities

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed that the quake struck at 10:38 a.m. with its epicentre in Madhabdi, Narsingdi. The department categorized it as a “moderate” earthquake, but residents described the experience as unusually strong and frightening.

People rushed out of homes, offices and commercial buildings as floors rattled and windows shook. Social media filled with videos showing cracked walls, damaged tiles and scattered furniture.

Hospitals across Dhaka, Narsingdi and Gazipur received over 200 injured people within hours of the tremor.

Dhaka: The Directorate General of Health Services reported that at least 20 people were admitted to DMCH and Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.

Dhaka University: Several students were severely injured after jumping from buildings in panic; at least 10 required emergency care.

Narsingdi: Forty-five people received treatment in the district hospital, with three critically injured individuals transferred to Dhaka.

Gazipur: More than 150 garment factory workers were hurt in a stampede at the Denimex factory as workers scrambled down staircases and exits to escape.

Cracks and Structural Damage Across Dhaka

Minor to moderate cracks were reported in residential and commercial buildings across Dhaka. Authorities are currently inspecting structures to assess safety risks, though no major collapses have been reported so far.

Residents shared photos of cracked ceilings, split walls and fallen household items, raising concerns about building safety in the densely populated capital.

Authorities Monitoring Situation; Aftershocks Possible

Emergency response teams have been deployed across affected districts. Officials have urged residents to stay alert and avoid damaged structures until assessments are completed. No significant aftershocks have been reported yet, but authorities warn that tremors may continue.

Bangladesh, located near active fault lines, remains highly vulnerable to seismic activity.
