More than 3,000 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations have been arrested by the police over the past 10 months, according to local media reports citing Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials.

The arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown on Bangladesh Awami League members and supporters under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, ahead of the country’s upcoming national elections.

At a press conference in the capital, DMP Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrests, saying that security forces were maintaining vigilance as political tensions rise.
“With the national election approaching, political activities will naturally intensify. However, there is no reason for public concern. We are taking election preparations keeping all these matters in mind,” Rahman was quoted as saying by leading Bengali daily Prothom Alo.
He added that the police were fully prepared to “thwart any subversive activities” that could disrupt public order in Dhaka or elsewhere.Fresh Arrests from Flash Processions

The latest wave of arrests came on Friday, when 46 Awami League leaders and activists were detained from flash processions held in different parts of Dhaka.
Last week, police arrested 131 Awami League members from similar processions across the city. These short, unannounced rallies have become a common form of political protest in Bangladesh, where opposition activities are tightly monitored by authorities.Awami League Condemns ‘Brutal Crackdown’

In response, the Awami League issued a strong statement condemning what it described as “brutal and inhumane repression” against its supporters. The party accused law enforcement agencies and political opponents of jointly attacking peaceful rallies and indiscriminately arresting its members.
According to the party’s statement, several activists were injured in violent attacks and denied medical treatment afterward. It further alleged that some members had been abducted or forcibly disappeared, with ransom demands made for their release.
“For waging this just struggle to re-establish democracy and safeguard people’s rights, our members are being persecuted in barbaric ways,” the party said in its statement.

Mounting Political Tensions Before Election
The arrests mark a period of intense political turmoil in Bangladesh as the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, oversees preparations for national polls.
Observers say the continuing detentions could escalate tensions between the administration and the Awami League, which ruled Bangladesh for over a decade before being ousted earlier this year.
Human rights groups have expressed concerns about due process, calling on authorities to ensure fair treatment of detainees and to respect freedom of political expression ahead of the polls.
