Delhi-NCR Severe Pollution:
Air pollution levels across the National Capital Region (NCR) have reached alarming levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crosses 450 in several areas, pushing the entire region into the ‘severe’ category.

According to official data, Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad are witnessing dangerously high pollution levels, raising serious health concerns for residents. Experts have described the situation as being akin to a “gas chamber”, with people forced to breathe extremely hazardous air.

AQI Crosses 450 at Multiple Locations in Delhi
At most air quality monitoring stations in Delhi, AQI readings remained firmly in the severe zone. Some of the worst-hit areas include:
• Wazirpur – 473
• Vivek Vihar – 472
• Ashok Vihar – 471
• Rohini – 471
• Jahangirpuri – 468

Other locations also reported disturbing figures, with ITO recording 430, R.K. Puram 439, and Mandir Marg 371. Even the IGI Airport Terminal-3 area was affected, registering an AQI of 339, placing it in the poor-to-severe category.
Noida and Ghaziabad Also Hit Hard
The pollution crisis has spread beyond Delhi, severely impacting neighbouring cities in the NCR.
In Noida, AQI levels were recorded at:
• Sector-62 – 375
• Sector-1 – 439
• Sector-116 – 422
Ghaziabad witnessed equally grim conditions, with:

Dense Fog and Low Winds Trap Pollutants
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a thick layer of dense fog and smog blanketing the NCR since morning. Dense fog was recorded on January 19, and moderate fog conditions are expected to persist over the next few days.
Experts attributed the worsening air quality to high humidity levels and low wind speed, which have trapped pollutants close to the ground, preventing dispersion.
GRAP-4 Enforced Across NCR
In response to the severe pollution levels, authorities have implemented Phase 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the NCR.
Under GRAP-4 measures:
• Strict checks are being conducted on vehicles entering Delhi
• Polluting vehicles are being stopped
• Construction and related activities have been severely curtailed
Environmental experts warned that unless there is a significant change in weather conditions, such as stronger winds, the situation could worsen further.
The administration has urged people to avoid stepping out unless necessary, wear masks, and take extra precautions for children and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to the harmful effects of severe air pollution.
