Startup India: A Decade of Transformation
Launched on January 16, 2016, ‘Startup India’ was envisioned as a transformative national mission to shift India from a nation of job seekers to a nation of job creators. Over the past 10 years, the initiative has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s economic and innovation architecture.
India today has over 2,00,000 DPIIT-recognised startups, making it one of the largest startup ecosystems in the world. These startups operate across diverse sectors including fintech, healthtech, edtech, agritech, deep tech, and manufacturing, strengthening domestic value chains and driving inclusive growth.
Employment, Innovation and Global Recognition
The government said that startups recognised under the initiative have collectively created over 21 lakh jobs across the country. This sustained expansion has significantly boosted employment generation, especially among youth and first-generation entrepreneurs.
India’s innovation capacity has also seen remarkable progress. Domestic patent filings by Indian innovators rose by 425 per cent between 2014 and 2024, reflecting a strong culture of research and development. Additionally, India’s position in the Global Innovation Index (GII) improved to 38th rank in the 2025 edition, underlining its growing global innovation footprint.

PM Modi’s Push for Responsible AI Innovation
The interaction comes close on the heels of the Prime Minister’s recent engagement with Indian AI startups. Chairing a roundtable at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, PM Modi urged startups to harness artificial intelligence for societal good, stressing that AI solutions should be affordable, inclusive, transparent, and ethical.
The Prime Minister has consistently encouraged startups to address real-world challenges and contribute to nation-building through technology-driven solutions.
Enabling a Startup-First Ecosystem
According to the PMO, ‘Startup India’ has strengthened institutional mechanisms, expanded access to capital, enhanced mentorship networks, and fostered a business-friendly regulatory environment. These reforms have enabled startups to scale across sectors and geographies, positioning India as a global innovation hub.
As the initiative enters its second decade, the government aims to further deepen startup participation in emerging technologies, manufacturing, sustainability, and global value chains.
