India-Russia Ties Could Shape Stability:
As the global order faces increasing turbulence, India and Russia could emerge as critical anchors of stability by leveraging their decades-old strategic partnership, according to a new geopolitical analysis. The report highlights that amid shifting power equations and rising uncertainties, New Delhi and Moscow may need to work in closer coordination to guide regional and global transitions.

The assessment comes in the backdrop of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in December 2025 and the broader fragmentation of international institutions. Analysts argue that traditional alliances are weakening, creating space for trusted bilateral partnerships to assume greater responsibility in maintaining regional balance.

India and Russia as ‘Vectors of Stability’
The report suggests that India and Russia, described as “two strong poles” of the emerging multipolar world, could operationalise a ‘Russia–India Plus’ framework. This approach would involve India and Russia acting as constant partners while engaging a third country tactically in specific regions such as South Asia, Central Asia, or parts of the Global South, including Africa.
Strategic affairs analyst Atul Aneja, writing for Geo Politika, notes that such a 2+1 formula could help stabilise regions experiencing geopolitical volatility, especially where external powers are seeking to expand influence.
Converging Interests in Afghanistan
A major area of convergence between India and Russia remains Afghanistan, a strategic gateway linking South Asia, Central Asia, West Asia and China. Both countries share concerns over regional security, extremism and the potential misuse of Afghan territory by hostile non-regional powers.
The report highlights growing unease among regional stakeholders following renewed interest by the United States in Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base, located around 64 kilometres from Kabul. US President Donald Trump had earlier warned of “serious consequences” if Afghanistan did not return control of the base to Washington, prompting strong reactions across the region.
India and Russia’s long-standing ties with Afghanistan, the report argues, create the possibility of coordinated action to prevent destabilisation and ensure regional equilibrium.
Central Asia and Strategic Urgency
Beyond Afghanistan, India and Russia’s geopolitical interests strongly align across Central Asia, a region increasingly contested by multiple global powers. The report underscores the urgency of developing joint Indo-Russian initiatives to safeguard connectivity, security and economic cooperation in this sensitive geopolitical space.

Bangladesh Factor Adds Complexity
The report also draws attention to Bangladesh, where recent political developments are seen as unfavourable to India. It claims that a regime change allegedly supported by external actors has resulted in an establishment perceived as closer to Pakistan and China.
In this context, the report states that India and Russia may need to coordinate diplomatically to counterbalance emerging trends in Dhaka. Notably, it adds that in Bangladesh, India and Russia’s interests “do not converge with any third country,” making bilateral coordination particularly critical.
A Partnership Under Pressure—and Opportunity
As the international system searches for new rules and norms, the report concludes that India and Russia may have little choice but to act with strategic clarity, trust and purpose. Their cooperation, analysts believe, could play a decisive role in shaping stability across some of the world’s most geopolitically sensitive regions.
