Tripura’s Chabimura to Go World Class:
Tripura’s iconic hill-and-river destination Chabimura is undergoing a major transformation to emerge as a world-class eco-tourism hub, with redevelopment work progressing rapidly under a ₹60-crore project supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The project is expected to be completed within the next 10 months, with a public opening planned by the end of the year.

Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said nearly 35 per cent of the work has already been completed, and the project is firmly on schedule for delivery in 2026.

Focus on Nature, Heritage and Sustainability
Speaking during his third inspection of the Chabimura site on January 7, Chowdhury said the redevelopment aims to enhance visitor facilities without disturbing the region’s natural environment or archaeological significance.
“We are working on how to develop this tourist spot in the lap of nature,” the minister said, adding that Chabimura has already gained national attention. “With basic amenities and public demand fulfilled, it can be made world-class.”
The project has been designed with a strong emphasis on eco-friendly infrastructure, ensuring sustainable tourism while preserving the site’s ancient heritage.
‘Mini Amazon of Tripura’
Often referred to as the “Mini Amazon of Tripura,” Chabimura is located along the banks of the Gomati River and is famous for its ancient rock carvings of Hindu deities etched into steep sandstone cliffs.
The most prominent attraction is the towering relief of Goddess Durga, which draws devotees, historians and nature lovers alike. Access to the site is primarily by boat through dense forest corridors, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience.
The area also supports trekking trails, birdwatching opportunities and panoramic river views, making it a rare blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

New Amenities to Enhance Visitor Experience
Officials said the redevelopment plan includes the construction of 26 eco-friendly log huts, a cafeteria, a children’s play area, landscaped zones, paved pathways and other visitor-centric amenities.
These additions are aimed at improving accessibility and comfort while maintaining the site’s ecological balance. The project is expected to be completed by October, followed by a formal opening by December, officials confirmed.
Tripura’s Broader Tourism Push
During the visit, Chowdhury also highlighted the state government’s renewed focus on tourism development. He said tourism was declared an industry last year, but “no concrete steps were taken” earlier.
“After our government came to power, we initiated several projects including Chabimura, Narikel Kunja and adventure tourism,” he said, adding that tourism would become a major livelihood generator across the North East.
The minister further said he would inspect Banduar in Gomati district, where a replica complex of the 51 Shakti Peethas is currently under construction.
