High-Level Task Force Meets in Tripura:
In a significant step towards accelerating economic growth and regional integration in Northeast India, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Hon’ble Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), participated in a High-Level Task Force Meeting on Infrastructure, Logistics Costs & Connectivity convened by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. The meeting focused on formulating a strategic roadmap to position the Ashtalakshmi states as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, in alignment with the Centre’s Act East Policy.

The high-powered meeting brought together key stakeholders to review existing infrastructure and identify priority interventions needed to unlock the region’s vast economic potential.

Strategic Push to Transform Northeast India
During the deliberations, Union Minister Scindia underscored the importance of multimodal connectivity—road, rail, air, waterways and digital networks—as the foundation for sustainable development in the Northeastern Region (NER). He highlighted that reducing logistics costs and improving seamless connectivity are crucial for attracting investment, boosting trade and creating employment opportunities.
“The Northeast is no longer on the margins of India’s growth story. It is central to India’s engagement with Southeast Asia,” officials noted during the discussion, emphasizing the region’s strategic geography.
Focus on Multimodal & Digital Connectivity
The meeting reviewed ongoing and proposed projects aimed at strengthening transport corridors, digital infrastructure and cross-border linkages. Special emphasis was laid on leveraging technology and digital connectivity to integrate remote and border areas with national and global markets.
Improved connectivity is expected to benefit key sectors such as agriculture, tourism, MSMEs, logistics and border trade, while also enhancing service delivery and governance.
Participation from Key States and Central Ministries
The meeting witnessed participation from Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram, Shri Lalduhoma, the Secretary, MDoNER, and senior officials from the Governments of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, along with representatives from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
The collaborative approach highlighted the Centre’s commitment to working closely with Northeastern states to ensure region-specific solutions and faster implementation of projects.

Ashtalakshmi States as India’s Southeast Asia Gateway
A central theme of the meeting was the vision to develop the eight Northeastern states—collectively known as the Ashtalakshmi states—as a vibrant economic corridor connecting India with Bangladesh, Myanmar and Southeast Asian markets.
Officials noted that improved connectivity would not only boost exports and regional trade but also enhance India’s strategic and economic presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Looking Ahead
The outcomes of the task force meeting are expected to feed into future policy decisions and project prioritisation under MDoNER and allied ministries. With sustained investment and coordinated planning, the Northeast is poised to emerge as a key driver of India’s growth story.
