Stand-in skipper K.L. Rahul on Saturday admitted that winning the toss felt almost as satisfying as lifting the series trophy after India thrashed South Africa by nine wickets in the third and final ODI to seal the series 2-1 at Visakhapatnam.

After losing the toss in the first two matches and battling heavy dew, Rahul finally won the toss in the decider and opted to bowl first — a decision that completely changed the game’s complexion.
“I don’t think the team has looked at me more proudly after the toss,” Rahul said during the post-match presentation. “Glad to give the bowlers a break on a tough outfield.”

Dry Ball, Deadly Bowling for India
Bowling with a dry ball for the first time in the series, the Indian attack delivered a clinical performance. Kuldeep Yadav (4/41) and Prasidh Krishna (4/66) ripped through the South African batting lineup to restrict the visitors to 270 runs, a far cry from the near-350 totals seen in the earlier matches.
Rahul praised Prasidh for bouncing back strongly after being heavily targeted in the first two games.
“Prasidh picking up early wickets was crucial, then Kuldeep did the rest. That’s how you contain aggressive teams in ODIs,” said Rahul.
Quinton de Kock’s Wicket Turned the Game
Rahul highlighted the dismissal of Quinton de Kock as the turning point of the match. The South African opener had already smashed a century and looked set to take the game away.
“QDK batted really well and was ready to change gears. That wicket was key. After that, it became much tougher for the new batters,” Rahul explained.

India Chase with Authority
Chasing 271, India made light work of the target, reaching the finish line with nine wickets in hand. The dominant chase underlined India’s control over the match and their ability to absorb pressure after two competitive earlier outings.
Rahul, who scored half-centuries in both the first and second ODIs, said the team’s biggest positive was its composure under pressure.
“In all games, SA put us under pressure. One result didn’t go our way, but our plans and processes stayed consistent,” he said.
What’s Next for India and South Africa
India and South Africa will now shift focus to a three-match T20I series, where Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Indian side. India’s next ODI assignment is scheduled for January 2026 against New Zealand, where the team will look to extend its winning momentum.
