North Tripura Leads with 11,000+ Water Conservation Structures
North Tripura was awarded the Best Performing District in the North East & Hilly Zone under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) Campaign.
The district earned acclaim for constructing over 11,000 water conservation structures between February and May 2025—an achievement enabled by meticulous planning and extensive public participation.
The district administration collaborated with elected representatives, village bodies, and thousands of community volunteers to build:
Check dams
Recharge pits
Contour trenches
Desilted ponds and tanks
These initiatives significantly strengthened groundwater recharge, improved availability in rural belts, and demonstrated a model for rapid, community-led execution. North Tripura also received a ₹2 crore cash prize for its exceptional contribution.
Sepahijala District Earns National Spotlight
Sepahijala district was honoured in its category for successfully enhancing water availability and quality through targeted interventions.
Key achievements include:
Rejuvenation of aging water bodies
Expansion of water harvesting systems
Restoration of critical catchment zones
Improved year-round access for households and farmers
The district’s collaborative model—driven jointly by officials and local communities—has yielded measurable improvements in water storage and utilization.
Alongside Tripura, districts from Chhattisgarh (Rajnandgaon), Madhya Pradesh (Khargone), Uttar Pradesh (Mirzapur), and Tamil Nadu (Tirunelveli) were recognized for excellence across India’s diverse zones.
Nationwide Commitment to Water Security
According to the official announcement, Maharashtra won the Best State Award, followed by Gujarat and Haryana for their large-scale conservation programmes.
President Droupadi Murmu stressed the urgency of protecting India’s diminishing freshwater resources, warning that climate change is accelerating water-cycle disruption. Quoting the Rig Veda’s wisdom—“apsu antah amritam” (water contains immortality)—she urged industries, institutions, and citizens to treat water as a sacred, finite national asset.

Jal Jeevan Mission: A Transformational Leap
Highlighting the government’s water supply initiative, President Murmu noted that tap-water-connected households have grown from 17% in 2019 to 81% in 2025. This progress, she said, has relieved nearly 9 crore women from the daily burden of fetching water.
She cautioned, however, that increased access must be accompanied by wise usage and emphasized adopting a circular water economy, reuse, and recycling practices.
A Call for Lifelong Water Stewardship
President Murmu urged citizens to view water conservation as a lifelong responsibility. She emphasized that sustainable water management can only be achieved through the united participation of families, civil society, and government institutions.
Tripura’s achievement at the National Water Awards 2025 stands as an inspiring example of what coordinated action, community participation, and strong leadership can accomplish.
