PM Modi met Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo (King) of Bhutan, in Thimphu on Wednesday as part of his two-day official visit aimed at deepening the historic and spiritual bond between India and Bhutan.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to attend the Kalchakra ceremony, a major Buddhist event, before departing for New Delhi later in the day. His visit reaffirms India’s unwavering commitment to its Neighbourhood First Policy and its long-standing partnership with the Himalayan kingdom.

Celebrating Bhutan’s Fourth King’s 70th Birth Anniversary

On Tuesday, PM Modi joined the Bhutanese people in celebrating the 70th birth anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, who is widely revered as one of Bhutan’s most visionary monarchs.
Born on November 11, 1955, Jigme Singye Wangchuck ruled from 1972 to 2006, ushering in an era of modernization, national unity, and international recognition for Bhutan’s unique Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy.

During the celebrations, PM Modi highlighted the shared spiritual and cultural heritage that binds India and Bhutan, noting that “the relationship between our two nations is not just diplomatic—it is deeply civilizational and spiritual.

India–Bhutan Partnership Reaches New Heights

Earlier in the visit, Prime Minister Modi held detailed discussions with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the current King of Bhutan. The two leaders reviewed cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, connectivity, technology, capacity building, defence, and security.

Following the talks, both leaders jointly inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a landmark collaboration symbolizing the growing energy partnership between India and Bhutan.

“Had a very good meeting with His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the King of Bhutan. We covered the full range of India-Bhutan relations,” PM Modi said in a social media post.
India is proud to be a key partner in Bhutan’s development journey,” he added.

Cultural and Spiritual Ties Reaffirmed

In a special gesture, PM Modi and the Bhutanese King visited Tashichhodzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body, to seek blessings from the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha.
The relics, sent from India, were displayed at the Grand Kuenrey Hall as part of the Global Peace Prayer Festival, commemorating the Fourth King’s 70th birthday.

The Prime Minister’s participation in both religious and diplomatic events underlines the depth and warmth of India–Bhutan relations, which continue to evolve as a model of mutual respect, trust, and shared prosperity in South Asia.
