PM Modi arrived in Bhutan on Tuesday for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties under India’s Neighbourhood First Policy. The Indian leader was warmly received at Paro International Airport by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, marking a ceremonious start to his visit.

Strengthening India-Bhutan Partnership
PM Modi expressed gratitude for the heartfelt reception in a post on X, saying, “Landed in Bhutan. Grateful to Prime Minister Tobgay for the warm and gracious welcome. This visit reflects the deep bonds of friendship and cooperation shared between our two nations.”
He emphasized that India and Bhutan share a “time-tested partnership anchored in trust, goodwill, and mutual respect.”
Prime Minister Tobgay also took to social media, welcoming Modi as his “elder brother” and expressing national excitement over the Indian leader’s arrival.
Visit Coincides with Buddha Relics Exposition
PM Modi’s trip coincides with the exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India — a deeply symbolic event that highlights the civilisational and spiritual ties between the two countries. The Prime Minister will offer prayers to the Holy Relics at Tashichhodzong in Thimphu and attend the Global Peace Prayer Festival organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan.
“The exposition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha during the Global Peace Prayer Festival reflects our two countries’ deep-rooted spiritual connections,” Modi said in his statement before departure.
Energy Cooperation Milestone: Punatsangchhu-II Project
A key highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, a major symbol of India-Bhutan energy cooperation. The project is expected to further boost Bhutan’s clean energy exports to India and strengthen regional energy security.

Honouring Bhutan’s Fourth King
PM Modi’s visit also aligns with the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan. Modi expressed his “honour” to join the Bhutanese people in their celebrations, reaffirming India’s respect for Bhutan’s leadership and cultural legacy.
Looking Ahead
PM Modi is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the Fourth King, and Prime Minister Tobgay during his stay. Discussions are expected to focus on developmental cooperation, connectivity, education, and technology partnerships.
“I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity,” Modi concluded.
