The Song That Stirred a Nation

Composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on November 7, 1875, during Akshaya Navami, Vande Mataram first appeared in the literary magazine Bangadarshan as part of Chatterjee’s novel Anandamath.

The song invokes the Motherland as a divine embodiment of strength, prosperity, and grace, awakening a sense of unity and self-respect that fueled India’s struggle for independence.

Described as the “soul of India’s freedom movement,” Vande Mataram became a rallying cry for generations of freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Rabindranath Tagore.
