DELHI |OCTOBER 27, 2025| SKY LINK TIMES|
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 13 districts in Andhra Pradesh as a deep depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal intensifies into Cyclone Montha today. The storm is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall near the Andhra coast by Tuesday (October 29, 2025), bringing widespread heavy rainfall and strong winds along India’s east coast.

IMD Forecast: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected
According to the IMD’s latest update on Saturday, the weather system lay centered about 620 km west of Port Blair, 780 km east-southeast of Chennai, and 830 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam. It is forecast to move northwestward, intensify further, and reach the Andhra coast by Tuesday.
The IMD warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall (115–210 mm in 24 hours) in several regions including Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, and coastal Karnataka till Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and south Odisha are also likely to witness moderate to heavy showers till October 30, accompanied by squally winds reaching 60–90 km/h near the coast.

Red Alert in Andhra Pradesh
The IMD has placed 13 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh under red alert for the next 48 hours. The alert warns of flash floods, waterlogging, and damage to weak structures, especially in low-lying areas of Nellore, Prakasam, East Godavari, and Visakhapatnam. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, as conditions remain rough to very rough over the southwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal.
Rough Sea Conditions and Coastal Impact
Sea conditions along the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha are expected to deteriorate rapidly, with high tidal waves and strong gusty winds predicted. Coastal residents are advised to remain alert and follow local administration guidelines.
Authorities are monitoring the storm’s progress closely, and disaster management teams have been kept on standby in vulnerable coastal districts.
First Cyclone Over Indian Mainland in 2025
Cyclone Montha will be the first cyclone of 2025 to make landfall over the Indian mainland. Earlier this month, Cyclone Shakti formed over the Arabian Sea near Gujarat but moved away without affecting the Indian coast.
The IMD continues to track Cyclone Montha’s movement using satellite imagery, radar, and oceanic observations to provide real-time updates.
