The Tripura government has issued new directives regulating private practice among medical officers under the Tripura Health Services (THS), aiming to maintain accountability and patient care standards.
Approved by the Governor of Tripura, the guidelines apply to officers who have opted for private practice instead of receiving the Non-Practising Allowance (NPA). They are framed under the Tripura Health Service Rules, 1974 and subsequent amendments.

Key provisions include:

No private practice during OPD hours: Medical officers are barred from private consultations during official Out-Patient Department timings on working days.

No private practice on government premises: Private consultations cannot be held in any government-owned building, quarters, or accommodation.

Location restrictions: Private practice is limited to within 8 km of the officer’s headquarters or place of posting to ensure availability for public healthcare services.

The Health & Family Welfare Department has warned that violations will invite disciplinary action under service regulations.

The move comes amid Tripura’s broader efforts to strengthen its healthcare system. The state is also working to introduce superspeciality courses at Agartala Government Medical College, with an MoU in the pipeline with AIIMS for hospital management.
