Trump tariff on India will take effect until August 27.

PM Modi will chair a high-level Cabinet meeting today at 1 PM to review the impact of the steep 50% tariffs recently announced by US President Donald Trump on Indian exports.

The White House confirmed that the move is linked to India’s continued imports of Russian oil, making it the second-largest buyer after China. Trump’s decision halts any further trade negotiations with New Delhi “until the current tensions are resolved.”

“No, not until we get it resolved,” Trump told reporters when asked about the possibility of renewed talks. His remark left ambiguity on whether “resolution” refers to the Ukraine war or underlying trade disputes.

The tariff package is being implemented in two stages:

  • 25% duties announced earlier this year over trade imbalances.
  • An additional 25% punitive tariff declared on Wednesday, explicitly tied to India’s Russian oil imports.

The new tariffs will take effect August 27—just days after Trump’s shortened 12-day ceasefire deadline for Russia expires. The US President has also hinted at secondary sanctions on all Russian oil buyers, intensifying pressure on Moscow to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

This marks a sudden cooling in US-India relations, which had recently seen positive momentum in defense and technology cooperation. Trade experts warn the tariffs could hit sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, steel, and IT services, while also straining geopolitical ties.
