ISRO to Launch BlueBird Block-2 Satellite:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite on Wednesday, marking another significant milestone in India’s growing role in global commercial space missions. The satellite, owned by AST SpaceMobile of the United States, will be launched aboard Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3-M6) and is expected to be the largest commercial communications satellite ever placed into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).The mission underscores ISRO’s increasing prominence as a reliable launch partner for international satellite operators and next-generation space-based communication technologies.

Next-Generation Satellite for Direct Smartphone Connectivity

BlueBird Block-2 is part of AST SpaceMobile’s next generation of BlueBird communication satellites, designed to deliver space-based cellular broadband connectivity directly to standard mobile smartphones. Unlike conventional satellite communication systems that require specialised devices, the BlueBird satellites aim to connect directly with everyday smartphones, potentially transforming global mobile connectivity—especially in remote and underserved regions.
Once deployed in Low Earth Orbit, the satellite is expected to support seamless cellular services from space, a major advancement in satellite-enabled telecommunications.

LVM3: ISRO’s Heavy-Lift Launch Vehicle

The satellite will be launched using ISRO’s Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3), India’s heavy-lift, three-stage launch vehicle. LVM3 has been developed to carry heavier payloads to orbit and has proven its reliability through multiple high-profile missions.
The LVM3 has previously been used for the Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 lunar missions, as well as two OneWeb missions, during which it successfully deployed 72 satellites into orbit. More recently, the vehicle accomplished the M5-CMS-03 mission, completed last month, further demonstrating its operational readiness and consistency.

Boost to India’s Commercial Space Capabilities

The BlueBird Block-2 mission reflects ISRO’s expanding footprint in the global commercial launch market. With increasing demand for satellite-based broadband and mobile connectivity, India’s proven launch systems like the LVM3 are emerging as competitive options for international clients.
By launching one of the largest commercial communication satellites to Low Earth Orbit, ISRO reinforces its technical expertise and its capability to support complex, next-generation space missions

Strengthening Global Space Partnerships

The collaboration with AST SpaceMobile highlights India’s growing partnerships with private space companies worldwide. As satellite-based communication becomes central to future digital infrastructure, such missions position ISRO as a key enabler of global connectivity from space.
The successful launch of BlueBird Block-2 is expected to further strengthen India’s reputation as a dependable and cost-effective launch service provider on the world stage.
