India Hands Over 250 Vehicles to Nepal for Elections:
India on Thursday handed over more than 250 vehicles to Nepal as part of its election-related assistance, as the Himalayan nation prepares for its parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5. The support aims to strengthen Nepal’s logistical capacity and ensure the smooth conduct of the democratic process.
This marks the second tranche of election assistance from India, following the delivery of over 60 double-cab pickup vehicles and other materials on January 20, according to officials at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.

Second Tranche of India’s Election Assistance
The vehicles were formally handed over by Rakesh Pandey, Charge d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy, to the Government of Nepal during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance. The event was attended by Nepal’s Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal and senior officials.
The Indian Embassy confirmed that around 650 vehicles will be provided in total for the upcoming elections, with additional consignments expected to be delivered in phased batches over the coming weeks.
Nepal Government Welcomes India’s Support
Speaking at the ceremony, Finance Minister Rameshore Prasad Khanal lauded India’s timely assistance, stating that it would play a crucial role in ensuring the success of Nepal’s democratic exercise.
“If the Nepal government had to procure these materials on its own, it would have required significant expenditure from state coffers at a time when the country is facing resource constraints,” Khanal said.
He also highlighted India’s role as a first responder during crises, recalling its swift support during the 2015 earthquake and continued assistance during critical moments.
Relief After Damage From Protests
The vehicle support comes at a critical time, as Nepal is still recovering from widespread damage caused during Gen-Z protests in September 2025, which resulted in the destruction of a large number of government assets.
A government-appointed committee found that over 8,430 government-owned vehicles were damaged during the unrest. Officials believe the newly delivered vehicles will help ease logistical challenges faced by election authorities and security agencies.

Longstanding India–Nepal Democratic Cooperation
India has been extending election-related assistance to Nepal since 2008, beginning with the country’s first Constituent Assembly elections. The Indian Embassy described the ongoing cooperation as a reflection of the multifaceted and multisectoral development partnership between the two neighbours.
“The support symbolizes the deep mutual trust and enduring friendship between the people of India and Nepal,” the embassy said in a statement.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The latest assistance underscores India’s commitment to supporting democratic institutions in the region while further strengthening India–Nepal bilateral relations. As Nepal moves closer to polling day, the cooperation is expected to contribute significantly to a peaceful and efficient electoral process.
