Delhi Chokes as AQI Crosses 400:

Delhi woke up to another hazardous winter morning on Monday as a toxic combination of dense fog and severe air pollution blanketed the national capital, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) beyond 400 and sharply reducing visibility across the city.

According to official data, the overall AQI stood at 402 at 7 a.m., placing Delhi firmly in the ‘severe’ air quality category. Pollution levels crossed the 400 mark at more than half of the city’s monitoring stations, underscoring the gravity of the crisis.

Over Half Monitoring Stations in ‘Severe’ Category

Out of 40 air quality monitoring stations, 25 reported AQI levels in the ‘severe’ range, reflecting extremely hazardous conditions in several parts of the capital.

Among the worst-affected areas, Vivek Vihar recorded an AQI of 458, making it one of the most polluted zones, followed by Anand Vihar (459), Wazirpur (444) and Rohini (445). Fine particulate matter PM2.5 remained the dominant pollutant.

Data from Lodhi Road and RK Puram monitoring stations was unavailable at the time of reporting.

Dense Fog Worsens Situation, IMD Issues Red Alert

The pollution emergency was compounded by very dense fog, which drastically reduced visibility across Delhi and adjoining regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ for dense to very dense fog in most parts of the city between 5:31 a.m. and 8:31 a.m. Citizens were advised to drive cautiously, use fog lights, avoid unnecessary travel, and cover their faces while stepping outdoors.

Visibility began deteriorating late Sunday night and remained poor through early Monday, slowing traffic and increasing travel risks.

Flights and Trains Disrupted Due to Poor Visibility

At Delhi airport, visibility dropped to around 125 metres, with runway visibility ranging between 100 and 150 metres. In an advisory posted on X, Delhi Airport said flight operations were being conducted under CAT III conditions, warning of possible delays or cancellations.

Airlines including IndiGo and Air India issued passenger advisories, urging travellers to monitor flight updates. Both airlines assured passengers that safety remained the top priority and confirmed that rebooking and refund options were available.

Rail services were also affected, with several trains — including the Rajdhani Express, Vande Bharat, and Jan Shatabdi — running behind schedule.

Health Advisory Issued

With air quality continuing in the ‘severe’ category, health experts have advised residents to limit outdoor exposure, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, as authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation.
