Tripura Organic 18 MT Rice Goes Global:
Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in organic agriculture exports with 18 metric tonnes of NPOP-certified ethnic rice being flagged off for export to Austria and the Netherlands on September 2, 2026.

The export, facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), is expected to open new international market opportunities for Tripura’s farmers and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), while strengthening the state’s presence in the global organic food market.

Four Traditional Tripura Rice Varieties Head to Europe
The exported consignment comprises four distinctive varieties of Tripura’s ethnic rice:
- Aromatic Kali Khasa Rice
- Aromatic Harinarayan Rice
- Biron Rice, a white sticky rice
- Maimi Hanga Rice, a variety of black rice
The rice has been aggregated from Farmer Producer Companies of Tripura supported by the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA).
The consignment is being exported by M/s Pratithi Organic Foods, Sonepat, an exporter of Indian organic agricultural products to international markets.
Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath Flags Off Consignment
The consignment was flagged off by Tripura Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, along with APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev and Apurba Roy, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of Tripura.
The event was attended by APEDA Secretary Dr. Saswati Bose, NABARD General Manager Tanushri Bhattacharya, Director of Agriculture Phanibhusan Jamatia, TSOFDA Mission Director Rajib Debbarma, APEDA officials, representatives of the exporter and logistics partners, and progressive farmers from across the state.
Ratan Lal Nath described the export as a proud moment for Tripura and highlighted the potential of the state’s organic and traditional agricultural products.
He said such initiatives could help farmers access new markets, achieve better price realisation and build sustainable livelihoods.
Farmers Could Get Up to 40% Higher Price Realisation
The export initiative is expected to provide participating farmers and FPCs with stronger access to international markets.
According to the information released for the initiative, participating farmers could achieve up to 40 per cent higher price realisation compared with the domestic market.
The development provides an important economic incentive for farmers to participate in organised, certified and export-oriented agricultural production.
It also demonstrates how traditional rice varieties can become commercially valuable products in international markets when supported by certification, quality control, traceability and organised supply chains.
APEDA Highlights Northeast India’s Export Potential
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said the export demonstrates the significant potential of the Northeastern Region to contribute to India’s growing organic and agricultural exports.
He highlighted the importance of connecting farmers and FPCs with international buyers while strengthening certification, traceability and quality systems.
APEDA has said it will continue working with the Government of Tripura and other stakeholders to promote the state’s distinctive agricultural products in global markets.
Export Builds on APEDA’s Buyer-Seller Meet
The latest export also follows a Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet (RBSM) organised by APEDA in Tripura in August.
The event brought potential international buyers together with local producers and helped establish market linkages.
The shipment to Austria and the Netherlands represents a concrete outcome of those buyer-seller interactions, converting international interest into an actual export opportunity for Tripura’s farmers and FPCs.

Austria and Netherlands Offer High-Value Markets
The export is particularly significant because Austria and the Netherlands are markets where consumers and buyers place considerable importance on quality, food safety, organic certification and traceability.
The NPOP certification of the rice varieties therefore strengthens their positioning in these discerning international markets.
The development could also encourage greater production of traditional and organic rice varieties in Tripura while creating opportunities for more farmers to participate in organised agricultural value chains.
A New Chapter for Tripura’s Organic Agriculture
The export of 18 MT of certified ethnic rice marks another step in Tripura’s efforts to connect its agricultural producers with international markets.
With APEDA, the state government, TSOFDA, NABARD, FPCs, exporters and farmers working together, the initiative demonstrates the potential of Tripura’s traditional agricultural products to move beyond domestic markets.
The shipment to Austria and the Netherlands could pave the way for more exports of Tripura’s organic and ethnic agricultural products, creating new opportunities for farmers and strengthening the state’s role in India’s growing agricultural export ecosystem.
