Agartala, June 1, 2025 – Torrential rainfall over the past 48 hours has led to severe flooding in Tripura’s West District, forcing over 1,300 families to evacuate their homes as the Howrah River breached danger levels and inundated several low-lying areas.

CM Prof. Dr Saha, in his Social Media handle post that, “In the last two days of continuous rain, various areas of West Tripura district have been inundated. About 1300 families have taken shelter in government shelter houses. The government is keeping a close eye on the flooded areas. The district administration has deployed NDRF/SDRF, civil volunteers, and other agencies in various areas. Water has also accumulated in different areas of Agartala, and water pumps are in operation. The people of the flooded areas are also being urged to follow government directives and take shelter in safe places.‘
Officials from the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirmed that emergency rescue operations are underway in the worst-hit localities including Agartala Municipal areas, Dukli, and parts of Sadar subdivision. Many homes, schools, and roads have been submerged, cutting off access to essential services and displacing thousands.
Temporary relief camps have been set up at schools and community centers, where displaced families are being provided with food, drinking water, and medical aid. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local administration teams are actively involved in evacuation and relief work.
“The situation is being closely monitored. We are prioritizing rescue efforts and ensuring that all affected families receive immediate support,” said West Tripura District Magistrate, in a press briefing.
Water levels in the Howrah River crossed the danger mark early Sunday morning, causing embankments to weaken and water to gush into residential areas. Local authorities have issued advisories urging people in vulnerable zones to move to safer locations.
Meanwhile, power supply has been disrupted in several areas as a precautionary measure, and schools have been ordered to remain closed until further notice.
Meteorological officials predict continued rainfall in the region for the next 24 hours, further raising concerns about the flood situation worsening.
The Tripura government has appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as rescue and relief operations continue across the district.
