ECI to Delete 43 Lakh Voters in Bengal:

In a major electoral roll clean-up drive, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has estimated that 43.30 lakh names may be excluded from the draft voters’ list in West Bengal. The draft roll is scheduled for release on December 16, according to information from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal.

Officials stated that the estimate is based on digitisation trends of enumeration forms submitted by booth-level officers (BLOs) until Monday evening, and the final figure may rise as the verification process continues.

Why So Many Names Are Being Removed

As per CEO office sources, the largest share of the deletions comprises dead voters, followed by untraceable and relocated voters.

Breakdown of the 43.30 Lakh Estimated Exclusions

Category Estimated Number

Dead voters 21.45 lakh
Shifted voters 15.10 lakh
Untraceable voters 5.5 lakh
Bogus/fake voters <1 lakh

Officials emphasized that the figures are not final, and untraceable voter numbers may change as the revision continues.

The total number of registered voters in the state, as of October 27, stands at 7,66,37,529.

Clean Booths Identified — But Political Doubts Arise

The ECI has identified 2,208 polling booths across West Bengal where no deceased, duplicate, or shifted voter was found during the verification process. These booths are being viewed as examples of complete voter list accuracy.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the authenticity of this claim.

Opposition Reaction

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari urged the ECI to conduct an audit of enumeration records from November 26, 27, and 28, when more than 1.25 crore forms were submitted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

The BJP demanded a re-examination, expressing doubt that such a large number of booths could be completely error-free.

Next Steps in the Electoral Roll Revision

Draft roll publication: December 16, 2025

Claims & objections period: Expected post-publication

Final roll release: Ahead of upcoming elections

The clean-up aims to ensure a transparent and accurate electoral process ahead of key state and national polls.
