Disney’s “Zootopia 2” has launched with a thunderous roar at the global box office, smashing multiple records and delivering Hollywood one of its strongest weekend performances in years. The animated sequel earned $96 million in North America, $156 million across the five-day Thanksgiving frame, and an astounding $556 million worldwide since its Wednesday release, according to studio estimates.
With that, the film has achieved:

The fourth-largest global debut of all time
2025’s biggest international opening so far

China Drives Nearly Half of Global Sales
Despite fluctuating relations between Hollywood and China, “Zootopia 2” delivered a staggering $272 million in China alone — nearly half its global total. No American animated film has ever opened higher there.
The sequel also secured China’s second-biggest nonlocal opening of all time, trailing only “Avengers: Endgame.” Analysts say the film benefited from enormous goodwill built by the original movie, known locally as “Crazy Animal City.” Disney’s Shanghai Disneyland also features a dedicated Zootopia theme land, boosting brand visibility.
A Strong Return After Nearly a Decade with Zootopia 2
Arriving almost ten years after the original, “Zootopia 2” once again reunites fans with beloved characters Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). Analysts say audience nostalgia, strong franchise reputation, and Disney’s global marketing power contributed to the film’s explosive performance.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, called the debut “a beloved franchise delivering exactly what audiences wanted worldwide.”
The opening marks the fourth-biggest domestic debut of 2025, further underscoring Disney’s renewed box office momentum.
“Wicked: For Good” Holds Strong
Meanwhile, Universal Pictures’ “Wicked: For Good” continued its impressive run in its second weekend. The film brought in $62.8 million domestically, lifting its North American total to $270.4 million and $393 million internationally.
The two PG-rated sequels together helped make Thanksgiving weekend one of the high points of an otherwise turbulent box office year. The five-day run generated $290 million overall, with $188 million from Friday to Sunday.
Analysts say this could indicate stronger year-end momentum amid upcoming releases such as “Avatar: Fire and Ash” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.”

A Possible Turning Point for Hollywood
After several underperforming releases earlier in 2025, analysts say the huge success of “Zootopia 2” may signal a much-needed shift heading into the final weeks of the year.
“This is a great result and a big momentum builder for the box office,” Dergarabedian said.
