PM Modi Prays to Lord Buddha Relics:
In a deeply symbolic and spiritual moment that underscored the centuries-old cultural and civilisational bonds between India and Bhutan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck offered prayers to the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha at Thimphu’s Tashichhodzong on Tuesday.

The relics, currently enshrined at the Grand Kuenrey Hall, were sent from India as a special gesture to mark the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth King and the Global Peace Prayer Festival organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan. The ceremony was graced by chants from Buddhist monks as both leaders sought blessings together in an atmosphere of serenity and reverence.

A Symbol of Shared Heritage and Friendship
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on X (formerly Twitter), “PM Narendra Modi joined His Majesty the King of Bhutan and sought blessings from the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha. Accompanied by chants by Monks, they prayed to the Holy Relics.”
Buddhism forms a strong spiritual bridge between India and Bhutan. Thousands of Bhutanese pilgrims visit sacred Buddhist sites such as Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Sarnath, and Sikkim each year, symbolizing enduring cultural and religious connections.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, Bhutan recently inaugurated a Bhutanese temple in Rajgir, a project blessed by the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s Chief Abbot.

A Longstanding Relationship of Mutual Respect
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan is part of an ongoing tradition of high-level engagement. His first foreign visit after assuming office in 2014 was to Bhutan. He returned again in 2019 and March 2024, when he was honored with Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo.
This award, which recognizes lifetime achievement and exceptional friendship, was a historic moment as Modi became the first foreign leader to receive the honor. The recognition symbolized Bhutan’s appreciation for Modi’s efforts in strengthening India-Bhutan ties and India’s growing stature as a global power.
People-to-People Ties: The Living Bridge
Around 50,000 Indian nationals are currently working in Bhutan across sectors like infrastructure, hydropower, education, and commerce, contributing significantly to Bhutan’s development. Their presence continues to reinforce the warmth and mutual respect that define India-Bhutan relations.
As both nations come together to celebrate shared spiritual values and deep-rooted friendship, the sight of PM Modi and King Wangchuck offering prayers at Thimphu stands as a timeless reminder that diplomacy is strongest when guided by shared faith, peace, and cultural harmony.
