Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla was given a grand hero’s welcome at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday following his successful two-week mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Shukla, who became the second Indian in history to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma, returned to Earth on July 16 as part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission. His arrival in Delhi was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, and hundreds of citizens who hailed his achievement as a proud milestone for India.
The Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion on Monday titled “India’s first astronaut aboard the ISS – critical role of space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047”. The debate is expected to highlight the significance of India’s human spaceflight programme and Shukla’s contribution to upcoming missions like Gaganyaan and the planned Bharatiya Antariksh Station (India’s own space station).
President Droupadi Murmu, in her Independence Day eve address, praised Shukla’s feat, calling it an inspiration for future generations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded his mission, reaffirming India’s resolve to build an Atmanirbhar Bharat in space exploration.
