Jammu & Kashmir, June 7, 2025 – A recent visit to the picturesque union territory of Jammu and Kashmir brought to the spotlight two of India’s most ambitious infrastructure achievements — the Chenab Rail Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge.
These transformative rail projects, located in the Reasi district, are more than just marvels of engineering — they are symbols of progress, national integration, and seamless connectivity in one of India’s most challenging terrains.
🌉 Chenab Rail Bridge: The Tallest in the World
Towering 359 meters above the riverbed, the Chenab Rail Bridge is the world’s tallest railway bridge, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower. Designed to withstand strong winds and seismic activity, it connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL).
🌉 Anji Bridge: India’s First Cable-Stayed Railway Bridge
Located between Katra and Reasi, the Anji Khad Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, built over a deep gorge with complex geological challenges. It features 96 cables and a central pylon rising 193 meters.
Both bridges are part of Indian Railways’ strategic vision to bring all-weather rail connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir and enhance regional development and tourism.
“It’s a feeling of immense pride that this bridge seamlessly blends ambition with execution, reflecting India’s growing capability to build futuristic infrastructure in the most challenging terrains.”
-Pm Narendra Modi
These engineering marvels mark a turning point in infrastructure development in the region and stand as a tribute to India’s growing expertise in megastructure projects.
